ROMKE HOOGWAERTS, 20, NEW YORK

What got you interested in photography?

I don’t remember. I don’t think there was an inciting moment, that innate curiosity for photos was always there.

At first, Mossless Magazine only showcased a photographer’s image with credit, then a few words, then a proper interview. What made you want to know more about the person behind the photograph?

I was a little disappointed with the modus operandi of photo blogs, everything seemed to be so contextless. This is amplified now, image aggregators are sieving out any history or meaning from image, now it’s only about how interesting it looks, nothing else. It’s tough to compete because everyone is so used to clicking next, but there are still people who take their time and are down to read a little.

You study film at SVA. How has your approach to either film or photography (more generally, art) evolved since you started studying there?

Actually I recently transferred to SVA’s Visual and Critical Studies program, but to answer your question I’ve started making less and thinking more about big projects.

In terms of cinematography, what would be your three favorite movies?

Oof, tough question. Red Desert, In The Mood For Love and Dogtooth, that film is incredible.

What catches your eye one’s work?

Magic!

Do you sometimes refrain from featuring someone’s work because it is too different than what you posted before?

Kind of, I might put it aside and post it when it works better. If I like the person’s work I’ll try make it happen.

Photographically speaking, who do you think we have to keep an eye on in 2011?

Sean Vegezzi.

What is next for Mossless Magazine?

I’m printing the shirts this week and the UPS guy should come today with our stickers. The magazine itself will be done soon!
